Expression of Interest by Major American Solar Energy Players in The Moroccan Solar Program

Accompanying His Majesty King Mohamed 6 during his recent to the United States, Mr Mustapha Bakkoury representing the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy - MASEN, conducted high level meetings during which he presented the Moroccan Solar Plan to American players in the sector.

Both BrightSource and SolarReserve have expressed their interest in the Moroccan Solar Plan and that will probably materialize in their participation to future biddings conducted by MASEN.

BrightSource Energy designs, develops and deploys concentrating solar thermal technology to produce high-value steam for electric power, petroleum and industrial-process markets worldwide. BrightSource combines breakthrough technology with world-class solar power plant design capabilities to generate clean energy reliably and responsibly. BrightSource’s LPT solar thermal system is designed to minimize impact to the environment and help customers reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. Headquartered in Oakland, Calif., BrightSource Energy is a privately held company with operations in the United States, China, Europe, Israel and South Africa.

BrightSource has approximately 1.8 gigawatts of power under contracts with Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas & Electric Company, California’s two largest utilities. In addition, the company manages an approximately 90,000 acre development site portfolio in California and the U.S. Southwest that has the potential to accommodate approximately 9 GW of installed capacity.

SolarReserve has commercialized the world’s leading solar thermal energy storage technology utilizing molten salt in a power tower configuration. SolarReserve’s team of power project professionals have assembled an extensive 5,000 MW worldwide development portfolio of large-scale solar projects featuring its advanced solar thermal technology (also referred to as concentrated solar power or CSP) as well as projects utilizing photovoltaic technology.

SolarReserve’s U.S. developed technology is the most advanced solar energy storage technology in the industry.  SolarReserve’s molten salt power tower design has the capability to deliver clean, reliable electricity at any time, day and night.  With designs that can provide from 7 hours to 24 hours of full power energy storage, SolarReserve’s power plants capture and store the sun’s thermal energy and can operate ‘on demand’ just like a conventional coal, natural gas or nuclear power plant.  However, SolarReserve’s technology does not release the harmful emissions associated with burning fossil fuels or other hazardous wastes associated with conventional power plant technology, nor does it expose utilities and rate payers to volatile fossil fuel prices over its more than 25 year project life.  Providing firm and predictable electricity generated from the sun, an unlimited fuel, SolarReserve’s technology also provides grid stability and a solution to intermittent electricity generation, a problem from which most other renewable technologies suffer.
